Small talk with Westview Orchards owners Abby Jacobson and Katrina Schumacher
Sisters and sixth-generation farmers Abby Jacobson and Katrina Schumacher are ushering their family business, Westview Orchards, into the future for the next generation to take over one day. Building on the hard work of their predecessors, the sisters have kept the 200-year-old Macomb County farm viable by adding not only a cider mill, but also a market, ice cream shop and other agritourism activities.

Westview + Mini-Tractor Pull Event = Fund-Raising Fun For Romeo Schools Foundation

February 1, 2010
(Romeo, Michigan)

Westview Orchards & Adventure Farm hosted the Mid-Michigan Mini-tractor Pull competition last fall and the results are in - a successful fund-raising event for the Romeo Community Schools' Foundation for Educational Excellence. Westview donated a percentage of their admission sales to them. Foundation board members Amy Aul, Sue Hier, and Mr. and Mrs. Pete Coutsos assisted at the two-day event. (Pictured with their donation check are Foundation Board Member, Becca Couch, and Westview's 6th generation, Katrina Schumacher.)

Almost 100 competitors with gas, diesel, and electric-powered mini-tractors pulled comparable weights on a dirt track, all striving to go the furthest in their class and weight division.

The Westview Orchards family is the oldest family farm orchard in Macomb County. 2010 marks its 197th year in the Romeo-Washington community. The farm started with first generation Michael who was awarded land for his naval service in the War of 1812 under Admiral Perry. Three generations later, the farm sold peaches from a truck parked on the roadside, and today, it has become a family attraction for everything from homegrown high quality produce and farm-fresh baked goods, to agri-tourism with 'good old-fashioned flavors and fun'. Today the sesquicentennial family farm is run by the 6th generation women, Katrina and Abby, and Bill, Abby's husband.

Recognized for her award-winning orchard operation and her dedication to serving Michigan's horticulture industry, Abby received the prestigious Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Horticultural Society for 2009 in December.

Whether plowing mazes through cornfields or establishing wineries and cider mills on their farms, more Michigan growers are adding tourist attractions to their property.

Agritourism, which entails a variety of on-farm activities, is a growing industry in the state, agricultural experts say. Farm tours, petting zoos, u-pick and other activities fall under the realm of agritourism.

It was a cool weather fall and Westview gave out some cool prizes, such as the autographed poster of Westview's Coach Izzo corn maze to Joe Dillon from Oakland County. He's pictured here with Katrina Schumacher of Westview Orchards & Adventure Farm. The autographed poster was one of several autographed items offered by Westview Orchards to raise money for Coaches vs Cancer.

All together, Westview Orchards & Adventure Farm donated almost $1000 to Coaches vs Cancer. "It was cold, but folks still came out to the farm for fun and helped a great cause on our S-party Weekend," stated Katrina Schumacher, 6th generation. "The Storm Troopers from the 501st Legion (www.501st.com) entertained our guests young and old on several weekends this fall. They are a lot of fun and donate their time to raise money for worthy causes, such as Coaches vs Cancer. We'll have them back again in 2010," she added.
